NATO SFA COE and IIHL signed a letter of cooperation

On the 2nd of December 2022 the NATO Security Force Assistance Centre of Excellence (NATO SFA COE) and the International Institute of Humanitarian Law (IIHL) signed a Letter of Cooperation in Sanremo.

Founded in 1970 in Sanremo, the IIHL is an independent, “non-profit, humanitarian association having social values as its objectives”. For almost 50 years it has played an important and unique role in debates and analysis on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and its applicability.

The aim of the agreement is to commit to a mutual collaboration in the field of education, research and in conducting joint seminars and conferences whilst sharing their expertise, knowledge and experience.

The signing ceremony of the agreement was followed by a fruitful discussion with prof. Greppi and his valuable staff about the challenges in the current application of International Humanitarian Law and the contrast of corruption in crisis zones.

This agreement is an integral part of the “Policy” line of effort of the COE in which the NATO SFA COE develops all NATO concepts and best practices related to SFA. In addition, it highlighted the important link between SFA and the Cross Cutting Topics (CCTs) and the legal framework with which both NATO personnel and Local forces need to comply in order to effectively create security and stability.
